Speaker Repair Case Studies

This part of our website is, we suppose, an area that demonstrates just how much Paul is “in to it”. But, that’s not really the purpose of this part of the website. You probably have that “in to it” business figured out anyway!
Our real purpose here is to let our customers see what goes into some of the more involved repair projects we take on. Hopefully we can pass on a little good information in an entertaining way. There is also a lot of good information here for those wondering why their speakers may not perform optimally, or wondering how they can be made to perform better. And, you get to see a lot of the “slips” designers and manufacturers of even well known speakers and speaker systems have made in the past.
These are generally some of our tougher projects. Do most projects go more smoothly? Yes!!!

Speaker (Driver) Repair Case Studies:
Every once in a while a good, conscientious reconer runs into a project that sort of bites them in the behind. Usually this happens when parts are hard to get, or flat out unavailable, and the speaker being reconed is a very nice one or a “high end” unit: Such speakers rather demand that the performance be very close to the original, and that in turn exacerbates theproblems with parts’ availablity. How does one match the original, when the parts are not available?
The other reconer bugaboo is that of finding problems beyond those evident from an initial inspection of the driver, or getting drivers damaged in shipping because the owner did not pack them sufficiently well enough to survive shipment to the repair shop. Just about as bad can be discovering that information from some source, about the driver, is innaccurate. A lot of wheel spinning can occur if one is trying to recreate some performance number supplied by a manufacturer or other source, and then it turns out that data wasn’t accurate in the first place.
IMF (Irving M. Fried) SM-12 woofer recone
The I. M. Fried (what a name for a speaker!!!) SM-12 woofers recently sent to us by a customer turned out to be “one of those projects”. However, they also turned out to be very instructive units to document the repair of, so, once we realized that, we took a lot of “documentary” pictures as we went along.
