Custom Tweeter Replacements
PR Audio now offers replacement tweeters with customized faceplates to fit YOUR speakers. At present, this service can replace most dome tweeters, some cone tweeters, and some horn tweeters. As we develop this service, even more will be covered, and we will try to offer replacement options for some midranges as well. As always, please Contact Us for any replacement speaker you may need.

The problem:
A major problem in trying to come up with replacement tweeters for many speaker systems is that the tweeters are often flush mounted for smooth response (good), but there is no standard for tweeter faceplate dimensions (trouble, often.) Exact replacements from the brand name manufacturers are obviously the best bet to fit, but can be prohibitively expensive when available, and literally hundreds of manufacturers are either no longer in business, or do not stock replacements for older models. Several suppliers sell replacement tweeters manufactured by quality companies you likely are familiar with, not to mention those who carry a large number of Asian and other manufacturers you probably never heard of. But, even if you find a tweeter that you know is good quality, and dimensions are listed for it, often faceplate dimensions are either incomplete, or rounded off. You may order tweeters thinking they will be a good fit, and when they show up, discover they are 1/32″ too large, the faceplate is a different thickness (likely causing diffraction problems* and their associated response ripples), the terminals require hole cut modifications, etc.
Our solution(s):
Recently, very high performance soft dome tweeters with neodymium magnets have begun to appear. Early models were often subject to magnets that depolarized easily, and a whole host of other problems. But, quality companies have made excellent progress, to the point where a very few offer neo magnet tweeters that are better than all but the best / most expensive conventional designs. These remarkable devices lend themselves to a solution of the problems noted above: We mount one of these tweeters to a low diffraction adaptor-faceplate, which in turn is sized to fit your speaker’s recessed tweeter mounting. The adaptor-faceplate is made of high density tempered masonite with a smooth front surface, and is painted black.
Of course, if you have a flush mount tweeter to replace, and we have a tweeter that fits (we can measure them down to thousandth’s of an inch if need be), then an adaptor is an unnecessary expense. The same is true if your old tweeters are surface mount units, or if you have the option of modifying your cabinet, using a router: In those cases, you probably do not need the information below, and can pick a standard tweeter from us or some other vendor.*
Here is how you get it:
Contact Us with a description of what you need. If you are lucky, we may have a tweeter that does fit your cabinet. It is helpful to know the brand name & model of the speaker system, and whether the tweeter is surface mount or flush mount (recessed so the front surface of the tweeter is even with the front of the cabinet.) We will also need to know the faceplate dimensions: Diameter, or height and width. If the tweeter is flush mounted, we will need to know the thickness of the faceplate at it’s outside edges, or, the depth of the cabinet recess. If possible, we need to know the impedance of the tweeter. (Many times this is stamped on the back.) Screw hole information is also useful. (More information on that will be posted here, soon.) In rare cases we will ask you to send your “dead” tweeter to us. (It will be returned if you wish to pay return shipping.)
If a custom faceplate / adaptor needs to be made, several replacement options are listed below. Prices will vary a little depending on the exact faceplate to be made — square or rectangular faceplates are usually a bit harder than round. We are working on the possibility of being able to re-use customers’ faceplates in some cases: Contact Us for details.
The Tweeters:
Medium output (92 dB) very good quality 3/4″ soft dome tweeter on custom faceplate. 6Ω.
Low distortion, excellent dispersion. Can be provided with a resistor / capacitor to give very good extended response, and increased power handling, at an 8Ω load, with lower sensitivity. Use at 5 kHz or higher.
# PR-DTS19N1-6, $20.00 ea.
High output (94 dB), good quality 1″ soft dome tweeter on custom faceplate. 8Ω. Very nice unit & heat sinking can be added for higher long term power handling.
# PR-DTS25N1-8, $28.00 ea.
High output (94 dB) premium quality 1″ soft dome tweeter on custom faceplate. 8Ω.
Very smooth response.
# PR-DTS25N2-8, $36.00 ea.
Medium output (90 dB) ultra-premium quality 1″ ceramic dome tweeter on custom faceplate. 6Ω.
Unit has shorting rings for very low distortion and extended response to 30kHz. If this efficiency works for you, this unit is an upgrade to almost anything you used to have, unless it is a very high end tweeter (well over $100 ea. from the manufacturer.)
PR-DTCER25N1, $42.00 ea.
High output (97 dB) very good quality 1″ soft dome tweeter on custom faceplate. 4Ω.
Low distortion, excellent dispersion, slight horn load. Can be provided with a resistor / capacitor to provide very good response and high power handling at a 6Ω or 8Ω load, at lower sensitivity.
PR-DTS25N3-4, $30.00 ea.
Medium output (90 dB) good quality 1 1/8″ soft dome on custom faceplate. 8Ω.
Low resonance and smooth response: Excellent for 2-way systems with a low crossover frequency.
# PR-DTS28N1-6, $31.00 ea.
Medium output (90 dB) premium quality 1 1/8″ soft dome on custom faceplate. 8Ω.
Low resonance and smooth response: Excellent for 2-way systems with a low crossover frequency. Also works well as a high power tweeter in 3-way systems; note output is 91 dB from 5 kHz up.
PR-DTS28N2-8, $40.00 ea.
**We will get individual pages up on these tweeters in the near future.**
Notes:
The output figures above are all at 2.83v / 1 meter.
Matched pairs can be provided for $10 extra per pair.
We can come up with good solutions for most cone, and many horn tweeters also. Contact Us with your needs!
*We will be posting tests soon of a surface mount vs. flush mount comparison for a typical 4″ faceplate tweeter. The results may convince you that you need a router (or different speakers!) if your tweeters are surface mounted.
